No, using a regular hard drive will result in a hard drive failure because they are not meant for such constant and heavy use. You have to buy a special hard drive called a surveillance drive because they are meant to withstand extreme temperatures caused by constant use. If you use just any old regular hard drive, it will work for a time but then will fail because constant use causes the hard drive to get very hot, and since the system constantly recordes, any regular hard drive will not last long.
We bought ours from Newegg. They had a 500gb for about $20. Just search for MaxDigitalData 500GB 8MB Cache 5900PM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Surveillance CCTV DVR Hard Drive.
